this typical example above, you will note this Owner Operator has expenses of
$1.39 per actual mile driven. If the Owner Operator is hauling $1.00 per mile freight, he's LOSING over
39 cents a
mile and with NO PERSONAL INCOME whatsoever. Since the broker or
company paying for the load is using unrealistic "computer miles", the Owner
Operator could be losing another 5 to 15% of this $1.00 per mile load.
So this "back-haul" or cheap freight isn't even $1.00 a mile. In the yellow highlighted area, we try to give the Owner Operator a $25,000 a year pre-tax income to the Owner Operator and now the truck has to make a minimum of $1.60 per mile just to cover the above expenses..... Please note that since we want to show the differences in an Owner Operators expenses vs. that of a Lease Yourself Driver, we have not included telephone, health insurance, lodging, meals, fines and those (maroon colored) expenses that both the Owner Operator and the Lease Yourself Driver would both incur. In the light blue highlighted area, we provide a $45,000 a year pre-tax income to the Owner Operator. This same truck now has to make a minimum of $1.77 per mile for EVERY MILE DRIVEN. If you take the cost of the truck payments out of the equation, you still need nearly $150,000 just to make less than $25,000 a year. There are thousands of drivers STUCK in truck payments and being threatened by their company (truck leasor) that they pay the truck off or they will ruin their credit. Get real !! Give them back their truck and work smarter.
If you drove 2,500 miles per week as a Lease Yourself Driver, you would make more than 3 times more money than an Owner Operator with all the hassles and going deeper in debt and no end in site.
IF YOU ARE AN OWNER OPERATOR, you could, literally get rid of all of your equipment (ie. truck, trailer, load bars, tie downs, tarps, chains, etc.), work 4 or 5 days a week like some of us do and make a lot more money, be home much more often and not have to worry about $5.00 a gallon fuel costs coming down the road. If you want to hire some drivers and pay them a real honest wage, you can do that too. It's in the training !! IF YOU ARE A COMPANY DRIVER, this is a no brainer. You need to be training immediately. Every day you wait is costing you twice what you're making today. You'll make more money in one day than the total cost of our training program.
